Cavalry FC Selects Three Players in Inaugural CPL-U SPORTS Draft

Cavalry FC is pleased to announce Gabriel Bitar as the first overall draft pick from the CPL-U SPORTS draft following the 2018 U SPORTS Men’s Soccer Championship at UBC in Vancouver, BC.  Three players chosen in the draft (including Bitar) have been invited to Cavalry FC preseason camp in early 2019.

Cavalry FC had the 1st, 14th and 15th draft picks and the selected players have been invited to participate in preseason camp with the opportunity to sign either with a Standard Developmental Contract for non-graduating student-athletes wishing to preserve their eligibility, or a Professional Contract for graduating seniors.

Bitar is a second year Carleton University student from Ottawa who plays forward.  Bitar scored 13 goals in the regular season for Carleton University and 4 goals in 3 games in the U Sport Championship finals. A former Ottawa Fury Academy graduate, Bitar is a young and exciting forward. Bitar is also 2017’s U Sports “Rookie of the Year”.

Cavalry FC’s 2nd and 3rd picks are Joel Waterman (5th year Trinity Western student from Aldergrove, BC) and Easton Ongaro (2nd year University of Alberta student from Edmonton, AB) respectively.

“We are excited about bringing these players into the Cavalry FC pre-season and seeing how they adapt in the professional environment. We have been keeping tabs on each of them through the U Sport season and each have been top performers for their teams and in their conferences. In Bitar we have an exciting, pacy and skilled forward with a good goal scoring record as he’s shown with Carleton University.

“With Waterman I had a chance to work with him this past summer in the PDL and he was one of our top performers en route to a National Championship. He is a very versatile player that is equally comfortable as a midfielder or defender, which emphasizes his leadership qualities and the type of player we are interested in bringing to our club.

“Easton Ongara is a 6’5” forward with great control and 1v1 ability. We are intrigued at how he will do on the back of an excellent U Sport season with the University of Alberta where he lead Canada West with 16 goals through the regular season. Ongara definitely has a big upside if he can adapt to the professional environment and we hope we can help with that”
