Club Story: Cavalry FC

The story of Calgary lies not only in its breathtaking Rocky Mountains, huge sky and vast golden fields. But also, in the welcoming, vibrant and selfless people who define its character.

These themes date back to Fort Calgary and the area’s armed services. A military that has also been part of our city from the Lord Strathcona’s horse, the volunteer regiment and the thousands of men and women who served and continue to defend Canada today. The Kings Calgary regiment and the Calgary Highlanders still serve today.

Soccer in Calgary has a long and storied history that dates to the Caledonians becoming unofficial champions of Canada from 1907 to 1909, winning the People’s Shield three years in a row and earning a place in Canada’s Soccer Hall of Fame.

Professional soccer in Canada has had its challenges. However, the game in Calgary has endured and still thrives today. Many notable players have come from the city of Calgary including Owen Hargreaves, Sam Adekugbe and Kevin McKenna; a sign of quality talent that exists within our communities.

The Southern Family through Linda Southern-Heathcott at Spruce Meadows Sports and Entertainment bring a unique offering that will help elevate the sport in Calgary. Creating a club that our fans and community will be proud to support.

Many recognize Spruce Meadows as Calgary’s most pristine and traditional equestrian ground home to s elite show jumping tournaments including the world renowned Masters tournament. The complex will now be home to Cavalry FC and be located next to the iconic International Ring and bordered by several established buildings, including the Gallery on the Green Congress hall. Fans will find the stadium accessible and comfortable It promises to be an enjoyable experience for everyone.

The club’s technical  philosophy of Cavalry FC will be rooted in some core principles from Calgary’s storied history. A history of bravery and organization shown by Calgary’s Own and Spruce Meadow’s official regiments. Leadership, perseverance and selflessness are other virtues the club will look for when recruiting players, coaches and staff.

These same ideals were held by our founders and still apply to the club today, a philosophy that focuses on tradition, community and family, while creating lasting memories for everyone at our club.

Calgary also has an active supporters group known as the Foot Soldiers that have followed their local PDL team Calgary Foothills FC since 2015. Every matchday supporters take the bus from the Ship and Anchor Pub to the Calgary Soccer Centre. Always singing, chanting and drumming sounds for the club they love.

That support and passion will continue as Cavalry FC joins the Canadian Premier League
