GET TO KNOW: Nicolas Wähling
Cavalry FC

One of Cavalry FC’s newest additions, Nicolas Wähling sat down with the club to share his story and his ambitions with the team.

Coming from Germany, Wähling offers a wealth of experience, having spent his youth playing as long as he can remember, while being raised in a football family. He joins Cavalry as a forward, joining the forces the club has up top, including fellow German forward, Tobias Warschewski.

“I enjoy playing a very offensive attacking style,” described Wähling. “My goal is to try and create chances and score goals – I like to be a very dangerous player.”

As the second oldest of five brothers, Wähling grew up playing alongside, and against, his brothers, who also all play professionally.

“I started playing at a very young age,” said Wähling. “Football is a huge part of my family. My brothers and I all went to academies together while growing up, and they’re more than just siblings to me. They’re my best friends, and we all support each other in our careers.”

Wähling’s youth career was spent entirely in Germany, where he was part of local academies. Much of his days were spent playing football, eventually becoming a huge part of his life at a young age.

“I loved the youth system in Germany, there’s a lot of pressure, which I thrive on. For me, football must be fun and something you enjoy. Having been only 13 years old and spending my life travelling the country and playing some of the biggest clubs – it was amazing.”

For five years, Wähling was part of Hoffenheim’s system. In 2016, Wähling was called up to Hoffenheim’s U19 team, where at the time, he played under German National Team Manager, Julian Nagelsmann.

“As a coach, he was extremely talented, ambitious, and confident. You just knew he was good. He always had a way of backing his confidence with his knowledge, which I learned a lot from. In a way, he was addicted to winning.”

The forward now shifts his focus to Cavalry, as he settles in with the club.

“When having initial discussions with the coaching staff around me coming here, I really liked what they had to say. I made myself familiar with the club by watching games and videos of the atmosphere and knew Calgary would be a place that I’d enjoy.”

Wähling has so far six appearances since joining the club in the first week of July and has been settling in nicely while training.

“Since arriving, it has been a lot of fun being here. I’ve been welcomed by everyone at the club and there’s a strong feeling of camaraderie among the squad. From the moment I was picked up by club staff at the airport, to my first day of training, I’ve felt so welcomed. I never felt like I was the new player coming in, from day one I’ve felt as though I’ve been a part of this team.”
