Calgary, AB (October 19, 2023) – Cavalry FC goalkeeper Marco Carducci has been nominated for the Canadian Premier League (CPL) Goalkeeper of the Year Award.
The two-time Goalkeeper of the Year winner (2019 & 2022) received the captain’s armband for the 2023 season and was integral in leading the club to winning the CPL Shield – awarded to the winner of the regular season. During the 2023 CPL regular season, Carducci played all 28 matches and accumulated eight clean sheets, while conceding the fewest number of goals in the league, with 27. While leading in league statistics in passes made among goalkeepers with 963, Carducci was also among the top goalkeepers with saves made with 63 and 211 recoveries with a 70 per cent save percentage. Carducci was named Allstate CPL Goalkeeper of the Month in September and has twice appeared in the CPL Team of the Week. Outside of his career on the pitch, Carducci has become a prominent figure within Calgary for his involvement within the community as an ambassador for KidSport Calgary, and his championing of men’s health with the Prostate Cancer Centre’s Women for Men’s Health.
This year, voting for all the CPL’s annual awards will be based on performances during the regular season, not including Canadian Championship, Concacaf or CPL Finals playoff action.
The winner of the Golden Glove Award will be awarded a unique piece of Inuit soapstone art, conceived by artist Kellipalik Etidloie. The Canadian Inuit Dog statue is awarded annually to the CPL goalkeeper voted best at his position because the Canadian Inuit Dog and goalkeepers are, similarly, protectors who play vital roles in guarding their communities.
The 2023 CPL Awards ceremony will take place on October 26. The ceremony will be broadcast live on the dedicated soccer channel OneSoccer, available as a linear channel on Optik TV (Ch. 980), the pay-TV service operated by TELUS, one of Canada’s “big three” telecoms companies, as well as on streaming service fuboTV Canada. OneSoccer is also offered as an affordable streaming service through the OneSoccer.ca website, via Roku, Chromecast, and Apple TV devices and with the OneSoccer app for iOS and Android devices.
Cavalry FC will play their final 2023 home match on ATCO Field at Spruce Meadows on October 21 at 2:00 p.m. MT as they host Pacific FC in the Canadian Premier League Playoffs semi-final. The winner will advance to the CPL Final against Forge FC at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton, ON on October 28.
